Slip resistance is not simply a question of choosing a rough-looking tile. Water, footwear, cleaning products, drainage, foot traffic and installation details all affect how a finished floor performs. For a private bathroom, a family kitchen, a hotel entrance or a commercial washroom, the right answer can be very different.
Why tile slip ratings matter
Floor tiles are often chosen first by colour, format and finish. Those are valid starting points, particularly where the floor is a major part of the interior scheme. However, a polished porcelain tile that looks exceptional in a dry dressing room may not be the right choice beside a shower, while a heavily textured anti-slip tile may create unnecessary cleaning demands in a low-risk living space.
A slip rating gives a useful indication of a tile's surface performance under a particular test. It helps homeowners, designers and contractors narrow down suitable products before a project reaches the ordering and installation stage. It is especially relevant where water, wet footwear, food spillages, oils or regular cleaning are expected.
The rating is only one part of a sensible specification. It should be considered alongside the room's use, the likelihood and type of contamination, whether people will be barefoot or wearing shoes, and how the floor will be maintained over time.
Guide to tile slip ratings: understanding R values
The R rating is the figure most commonly seen on porcelain tile product information. It comes from a ramp test, in which a person wearing standard safety footwear walks on a tiled incline treated with oil. The angle is increased until the point at which slipping occurs. A higher R number indicates a greater level of slip resistance within this shod-foot, oil-contaminated test.
For interior tile selection, these broad descriptions are helpful:
- R9 is generally suited to dry internal areas with low slip risk, such as living rooms, bedrooms and many domestic kitchens.
- R10 offers increased grip and is a common choice for kitchens, hallways, utility rooms, cloakrooms and general commercial interiors.

For architects, designers and commercial buyers, the key point is to request the relevant technical data early. If a project needs a particular wet pendulum result, confirm that the manufacturer has tested the chosen finish and that the result meets the specification requirement. Do not assume that an R rating alone demonstrates compliance with a PTV requirement.
Barefoot ratings for showers and poolside areas
Where people are likely to walk barefoot on wet tiles, a different test may be more meaningful. Barefoot ramp ratings are commonly shown as A, B or C. The test is carried out on an inclined tiled surface with water and a wetting agent, reflecting environments such as communal showers, spa areas, swimming pool surrounds and changing rooms.
Class A is intended for lower-risk barefoot wet areas, while B and C provide progressively greater grip. Class C is generally associated with the most demanding situations, such as sloping pool edges, steps leading into water and areas with a consistently high level of wetness.
For a domestic ensuite, the right finish depends on the shower design. A level-access walk-in shower, particularly one used by children or older family members, benefits from a tile selected specifically with wet barefoot use in mind. Smaller formats can also help because the additional grout joints add grip, although grout is not a substitute for choosing an appropriate tile surface.
Choosing the right rating room by room
There is no single rating that suits every room in a home or commercial scheme. Start with how the floor will actually be used, not just the room name.
A kitchen can range from a quiet breakfast space to a busy family room with pets, children and regular spills. A quality R9 or R10 porcelain tile is often appropriate for domestic kitchens, depending on the finish and household use. For professional kitchens, the requirement is normally higher because grease, water and intensive cleaning are expected.
In bathrooms, consider the areas separately. The main floor may have a different requirement from the shower enclosure. A matt tile with suitable wet performance is often more practical than a highly polished surface, while careful falls to the waste help prevent standing water.
Hallways and entrances need to cope with rain, grit and wet footwear. A tile with greater surface grip can be a sensible choice, but effective barrier matting is equally important. Without it, water and fine debris can be carried further into the property, affecting both appearance and slip risk.

Even the best-specified tile cannot compensate for poor preparation or installation. Floors should be flat, sound and appropriately waterproofed where necessary. In wet rooms, the substrate and tile backing system need to work together, with correct falls directing water towards the drain rather than allowing it to pool.
Grout selection matters too. Use a suitable grout width and colour for the tile and environment, and follow the installation system guidance for adhesives, primers, boards, trims and sealants. Movement joints should be planned properly, particularly across larger areas, thresholds and changes of substrate.
Cleaning is often overlooked at handover. Textured tiles need the right routine to prevent dirt, soap film or grease building up in the surface profile. For larger projects, record the selected finish, intended use, test information and installation requirements within the schedule.
